How to Check If a Product Is Still Under Warranty

Something breaks, and before calling anyone you need one piece of information: is this still covered? If the receipt isn't sitting in an obvious place, the instinct is to assume the answer is no and move on. That's often wrong — there are several places to check before giving up on a warranty claim.

Start with the manufacturer's own lookup tool

Most major electronics and appliance brands — Apple, Samsung, LG, Dell, Sony, Whirlpool, and others — run a warranty status checker on their own website, usually under "Support" or "Check your warranty." You enter the product's serial number (printed on a label on the device itself, or in the box) and it tells you the coverage window directly from the manufacturer's own records, no receipt required.

This only works if the product was registered at some point, or if the manufacturer ties warranty start dates to the manufacture or ship date rather than your purchase date — which some do by default. It's worth trying before anything else, since it takes under a minute and needs nothing from you except the serial number.

If that comes up empty, look for the purchase itself

The receipt isn't the only record of a purchase — it's just the most obvious one.

  • Search your email for the store's name or "order confirmation" — most online and many in-store purchases send a confirmation or digital receipt automatically.
  • Check your bank or card statement for the charge — the date alone is often enough to work out whether you're still inside a one-year manufacturer warranty, even without the itemized receipt.
  • Check the store's own account history if you shopped there logged in — most major retailers keep a purchase history tied to your account or loyalty card indefinitely.
  • Look for a warranty registration card or confirmation email, if you registered the product when you bought it.

Know which clock you're actually checking

A product can carry two separate kinds of coverage, and "is it still under warranty" can have two different answers depending on which one you mean.

The manufacturer's written warranty is the one with a specific, printed length — often a year. Separately, the legal or implied warranty that comes from consumer protection law runs independently and often outlasts it. Before concluding you're out of options once the shorter, printed warranty has lapsed, it's worth checking whether that second, longer-running protection still applies.

The habit that makes this a non-issue next time

Every method above is a workaround for not having the purchase record handy when you need it — useful to know, but still slower than just having it, and still of no help in the rare case where there's genuinely nothing to find. Fondly Home keeps the receipt, the manufacturer's stated warranty window, and the return deadline together from the moment you upload a photo, so "is this still covered" is an answer you already have instead of a search you have to start.

Upload a receipt once and Fondly Home tells you exactly what's still covered, any time you ask.

Never have to search for this again
